A lot of people say: "Really? You're getting upset because I'm talking shit about your favorite player? He doesn't even know you!" Which is 100%, and I don't usually get upset because of this foolishness, not anymore at least, however, I totally understand it. See, the keyword in the statement people say is not "player" or "team"; it's "your". The person is getting upset not because you're trashing Messi or making fun of Barcelona, it's because you're bad mouthing something that belongs to them, or they belong to it. You're insulting something that's mine, doesn't matter what it is. If I personally didn't like Messi, I wouldn't give two fucks, but because I choose to be his fan, you can't talk shit about him because it indirectly means you're talking shit about me, even if I didn't realize that this is how my brain is internalizing this situation.
You don't believe me? The same person will attack you if you say something about Messi, then will go silent, minding his own business, until you talk shit about Elvis, or Nadal, or BMW, or Chipotle, or Yeezis (or whatever the hell they are called)! It's not about this individual thing you're talking shit about, it's about anything that will trigger the defensive mechanism in someone as if they're being personally attacked, because, well, they're personally attached!
So, the next time a person is laughing at you for being a fan and getting a little worked up about something they deem silly, as an experiment, try to attack their grill brand, or the favorite airlines, and see how they turn red!
